Jennifer Martin Mitchell is a native South Carolinian who holds degrees in History and Sociology from the University of South Carolina (1983) and in History (with emphasis in Historic Preservation) from Middle Tennessee State University (1994). At the latter she was a research assistant under the guidance of Dr. Carroll Van West at the the Center for Historic Preservation. 

Martin came to North Carolina in 1992 to conduct the Duplin County historical resources survey, which resulted in her book Along the Banks of the Old Northeast: The Historical and Architectural Development of Duplin County, North Carolina. She subsequently completed a survey of Macon County in the southwest mountains.

In 1995 Martin became preservation specialist in the Archives and History Western Office in Asheville, and in 1998 was promoted to National Register coordinator in Raleigh. Since 2000 she has worked as a preservation consultant and is a principal in MdM Historical Consultants, Inc., in Durham.
